Model Project

The DLG/CG-22 Model Project is simply to build a model of the USS England DLG/CG-22. This section of the site will document each of the stages (when I get some of the work done).  Folks who check into the site can see what progress has been made as I go along.  I also have obtained a Buckley Class destroyer model kit at the Kit Collectors Exposition & Sale and I'll be building DE-635 from that kit.

I obtained a 1970s era Revel USS Halsey kit that will be used to create the USS England. This kit was obtained from Joseph W. Reyna who has kits for sale at http://GoldMM.com.

Anyway, the progress is as follows.

  • Stage 1 8/8/99 - All of the necessary paints and such were obtained from a local model store. Two issues have been encountered.

    1. The model is incorrect in that it has only two 55B radars, one forward and one aft. Along the way two more will need to be made or obtained.

    2. The decal set is for Halsey with the numbers 23. Decals for 22 and the stern decal for "ENGLAND" will need to be located or created.

  • Stage Two 8/10/99  - The major portions of the hull and main deck and above have been assembled and are being painted as shown on stage two's page.  Painting the hull will be the major effort for the near term. Issues encountered and solved:

  1. The kit did not come with safety lines, and on the CG's they were plentiful. Joe Reyna pointed me to a distributor for these items at Gold Medal Models. All sorts of other great items come in the set that will enhance the CG!!

  2. Item 2 from 8/8/99 was also resolved from Gold Medal Models as was the lack of an SPS 10 radar in the Revel kit. These parts are all on order.

  3. This leaves the only outstanding issue, the two 55B radars that Revel left out of their kit. These will have to be fabricated.

  • Stage Three 8/12/99 - Haze gray is applied. All of the spraying is completed and all other painting will be done by brush. The next step will focus on completing the painting of the hull so that the model can be mounted and work can be started on the decks while waiting for the items from Gold Medal Models.

  • Stage Four 8/13/99 - The hull is red and the bulkheads haze gray! Now comes some slow detail work on the decks and then preparing the missile launchers, guns and other items for installation. A new issue has been encountered - the black line that separates the gray and red at the waterline is very hard to paint properly. Using tape, the paint bleeds a bit. I am looking for a better way to apply this stripe so the hull painting will not be continued. The areas aloft will be left until the hull is completed. To much risk of damage when turning her upside down for hull work.

  • Stage Five 8/18/99 - The water line black stripe issue was solved by Bill Thompson! The hull paining is done. Detail work continues. The items from Gold Medal Models arrived and they are great! These will be used to make the SPS-10, safety lines, ladders, 'helo nets' and more to be applied later. the only outstanding item now is making or getting two 55B radars.

  • Stage Six 8/28/99 - The superstructure was painted, all missile launchers, radars (minus the 55B) and a number of other items were painted and attached. Boat davits, boats, screws and a number of other items painted. She is looking more and more like herself! The detail work goes very slow!

  • Stage Seven 9/5/99 - Fire stations, helicopter, small boats, safety lines, helo-safety nets and more little parts painted.
